This year too, the families are expected to do the ritual with dedication and in environmental-friendly ways. From the installation of the idol till Visarjan, each step has religious importance.
Preparations Before the Puja
According to tradition, it is the first step. Worshippers are suggested to bring home eco-friendly idols or clay idols rather than POP statues. The idol is set on a wooden block wrapped in yellow or red cloth. Some of the basic items that find use during the puja are a Kalash of water, mango leaves and a coconut, along with rice grains, turmeric, kumkum, sandalwood paste, durva grass, fresh flowers, betel leaves, incense sticks, fruits and sweets like modaks.
One should maintain a clean and devotional space for conducting the ritual. Panchamrit, a holy mixture of milk, curd, ghee, honey and sugar, is also prepared for offering.
Step-by-Step Ganesh Puja Vidhi
- Ganesh Sthapana (Idol Placement): On Ganesh Chaturthi morning, devotees take a bath, wear clean clothes and position the idol in an east or north direction. The arrangement is purified with Gangajal.
- Sankalp (Prayer Resolution): Relatives promise to conduct the puja with sincerity, pronouncing their names and family gotra.
- Kalash Sthapana: The Kalash is kept by the idol as a mark of good fortune.
- Avahan and Dhyana (Invocation and Meditation): A diya and agarbatti are lit. People recite “Om Gan Ganapataye Namah” and think of Lord Ganesha, calling Him home.
- Offerings (Naivedya and Puja): The idol is decorated with haldi, kumkum, durva grass, flowers and garlands. Modaks, fruits and Panchamrit are also offered.
- Chanting and Aarti: Devotees chant Ganesh Atharvashirsha or Ganesh Chalisa, and mantras like “Vakratunda Mahakaya Suryakoti Samaprabha, Nirvighnam Kuru Me Deva Sarva-Kaaryeshu Sarvada.” Aartis are done with devotion, moving the thali in clockwise circles in front of the idol.
- Prasad Distribution: Modaks, which are said to be Bappa’s favourite sweet, are distributed among family, friends and neighbours.
Daily Rituals and Final Visarjan
Each day of the festival, devotees make offerings of fresh flowers and sweets in the morning and evening, accompanied by Aarti. The idol is maintained clean and placed within the energy of devotion.
On the last day, families perform a farewell ceremony. The final Aarti is done, and the devotees recite “Ganpati Bappa Morya, Pudhchya Varshi Lavkar Ya!” while immersing the idol in water. Environmental-friendly visarjan practices, such as symbolic immersion in a bucket, are promoted when river immersion becomes impossible.
Faith and Devotion
Ganesh Chaturthi is not just a ritual, but a joyous celebration of unity, religion and prosperity. People believe that devout worship of Lord Ganesha guarantees wisdom, happiness and peace for the whole family.
