In a tragic incident, a woman who donated a part of her liver to her husband died following his death after the transplant surgery in Pune. The deaths have prompted the Maharashtra health department to issue a notice to Sahyadri Hospital in the city, news agency PTI reported.

The deceased have been identified as Bapu Komkar and his wife Kamini. The couple underwent transplant procedures on August 15.

It is learnt that Bapu’s condition worsened post-surgery, and he breathed his last on August 17. The report suggests Kamini initially recovered but developed an infection on August 21 and passed away during treatment.

The state’s Deputy Director of Health Services, Dr. Nagnath Yempalle, confirmed that a notice was sent to the hospital.

“We have issued a notice to the hospital and sought details of the recipient and the donor, their video recordings, and the line of treatment. The hospital has been asked to furnish all the details by 10 am on Monday,” PTI quoted him as saying.

The family members of the deceased have alleged medical negligence and demanded a thorough investigation into the deaths.

Sahyadri Hospital has acknowledged the notice and stated it is cooperating fully with authorities. In an official statement, the hospital said both surgeries were conducted as per standard medical protocols.

“We are fully cooperating in the investigation. We are committed to providing all necessary information and support to ensure a thorough review of this matter,” the hospital said in a statement, PTI reported.

The hospital stated the patient (Bapu Komkar) was a high-risk individual with many complications.

“We deeply sympathise with the Komkar family in this time of immense loss. A living donor liver transplant is one of the most complex procedures, and in this case, the patient was a high-risk person with many complications,” it said.

The hospital added that Kamini had initially recovered but later suffered septic shock and multi-organ failure, which proved deadly.

It also stressed that the family had been thoroughly counselled on the risks involved. “We remain committed to providing the highest standards of care and extend our full support to the bereaved family during this tragic time,” the statement added.

The health department is currently reviewing the case as part of its investigation.
