Opposition INDIA Bloc’s Vice Presidential candidate Sudarshan Reddy on Sunday warned that all values enshrined in the Indian constitution were at stake, and the idea of fraternity was coming under attack.

The former Supreme Court judge is contesting against NDA’s candidate C Radhakrishnan for the Vice Presidential post after the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar, citing health reasons. The INDIA bloc fielded Reddy, described as one of “India’s most distinguished and progressive jurists.”

Reddy promised that if given the opportunity, he will make all efforts in defending the Constitution, which was increasingly coming under attack today. “All values enshrined in our Constitution are at stake. I consider the idea of fraternity perhaps is coming under attack,” he told reporters at an event in Tamil Nadu on Sunday.

Regarding his opponent, the former judge promised that the upcoming vice presidential election will be “one of the most decent election” fought in the recent past of the country.

“I do not speak about him (CP Radhakrishnan) because I have decided and declared openly in public that I do not want to make any comment whatsoever about the other candidate because the contest is for the post of Vice President,” he said.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin welcomed Reddy, saying that he fought for justice and humanity during his tenure as a judge, and will respect Tamil Nadu’s emotions as VP.

“Those who trust in Democracy have accepted you as the VP candidate. In the past 60 years, he has worked for justice. He worked as an honest Judge and protected the Constitution. Why he is needed now is because the BJP is attempting to destroy the Constitution, and we need him to protect it,” said Stalin.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge announced former Supreme Court judge Reddy as the opposition Vice President candidate and informed that he will file his nomination on August 21 for the September 9 election.

Reddy was appointed as Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court in 2005. He served as a Supreme Court judge from 2007 to 2011.
