Court RESTRAINS CarryMinati from making objectionable clips, relief to KJo

Mumbai Court RESTRAINS CarryMinati from making ‘Objectionable’ videos, grants relief to Karan Johar

A Mumbai court has ruled in favour of Karan Johar, restraining YouTuber CarryMinati and others from posting defamatory content against him. The case followed CarryMinati’s roast video Coffee with Jalan, parodying Koffee With Karan. Despite the video’s deletion, Johar claimed the damage persisted as clips continued circulating online.

Karan Johar has often faced criticism online for promoting nepotism in Bollywood. For a long time, people have made memes and roasts about him, calling him the main example of Bollywood’s insider culture. The talk about nepotism grew stronger in recent years, and things became serious when youtuber Ajey Nagar (CarryMinati) made a roast video about him that led to legal action.

Court order in favour of Karan Johar

As per reported in the Hindustan Times, a Mumbai court on Monday barred Ajey Nagar along with Meta Platforms and others, from posting or sharing any objectionable or defamatory content about the filmmaker.

CarryMinati’s roast video targeted Karan Johar

After CarryMinati uploaded a roast video titled Coffee with Jalan on his YouTube channel, Karan Johar took legal action by filing a defamation case against the creator and his team. The video, said to be a parody of Karan’s popular talk show ‘Koffee With Karan’, allegedly included offensive remarks aimed at Bollywood, the issue of nepotism, and Karan himself.

Judge comments on Karan Johar’s complaint

On February 9, Monday, Judge Pandurang Bhosale issued an ad-interim injunction against CarryMinati. In his order, the judge observed: “Prima facie, it appears that Ajey Nagar and Deepak Char (manager of the CarryMinati channel) have made defamatory statements and used vulgar language against the plaintiff. These videos need to be taken down immediately. There should be an injunction against all those who circulate and re-circulate these videos on social media platforms. This is a fit case to pass ad-interim injunction orders against the defendants.”

Karan Johar accuses CarryMinati of defamation

Karan, in his legal submission, accused CarryMinati and his manager Deepak Char of making insulting and damaging statements about him. He added that the video used highly offensive language, which he believed should lead to its immediate takedown from all online platforms.

Karan Johar disagrees with CarryMinati’s defence

Ajey defended himself by saying that the video in question had already been removed from his channel. However, Karan argued that the damage was already done, as the video had garnered millions of views before being deleted and continues to circulate online through short clips and reels shared across social media platforms.

Court’s directions in Karan Johar case

Judge Bhosale, in the ad-interim order, further stated: “All the defendants No. 1 to 5, Defendant No. 8/John Doe, and their agents, servants or any persons claiming through or under them are hereby temporarily restrained from making and uploading videos, posting, re-posting, giving interviews, corresponding, communicating, uploading, printing, publishing, re-publishing, hosting, circulating or re-circulating any other defamatory/slanderous content or making any further defamatory content, derogatory remarks, posts, messages, tweets, videos, interviews, communications or correspondence, whether similar to the impugned content or otherwise, in any manner whatsoever in relation to the plaintiff on any social media platforms until the decision of the notice of motion. Defendant No. 6 is directed to take down the videos and URLs.”

Karan Johar awaits release of ‘Accused’

On the work front, Karan is now gearing up for the release of his next production, ‘Accused’. Directed by Anubhuti Kashyap, the film features Konkona Sen Sharma and Pratibha Ranta in the lead roles. It is set to premiere on Netflix on 27 February. Go to Source
