Mahavatar Narasimha mints USD 1.75 million in North America

‘Mahavatar Narasimha’ holds strong in North America with USD 1.75 million collection

The Indian animated film, Mahavatar Narasimha, has achieved unexpected success in North America, grossing USD 1.75 million despite competition from major live-action films. Its emotional storytelling and mythological roots resonate with audiences, particularly the Indian diaspora. Directed by Ashwin Kumar, the film’s unique retelling of the Hiranyakashyap and Prahlad tale, emphasizing good versus evil, has captivated viewers.

Indian animation spectacle Mahavatar Narasimha is proving to be a surprise success story in overseas markets, particularly in North America, where it has now grossed USD 1.75 million in its run so far. Competing head-on with big-ticket live-action blockbusters like Saiyaara, Coolie, and War 2, the film has managed to carve out its own loyal audience, driven largely by its strong emotional connect and mythological roots. What makes this performance noteworthy is the context. North American audiences are accustomed to the finest in global animation, from Hollywood giants like Pixar, DreamWorks, and Disney. Yet, despite the clear difference in production budgets and technical polish, Mahavatar Narasimha has resonated deeply with viewers. Industry trackers note that the film’s core strength lies not in attempting to replicate Western animation standards but in offering something unique—a heartfelt retelling of Indian mythology that emphasizes the eternal battle between good and evil. The film, directed by Ashwin Kumar brought a vision to bring sacred texts and folklore to life by revisiting the legendary tale of Hiranyakashyap and Prahlad. It culminates in the awe-inspiring emergence of Lord Narasimha, a half-lion, half-human avatar of Lord Vishnu, symbolizing divine intervention and justice. This timeless narrative of faith, devotion, and moral righteousness has struck a chord with Indian diaspora audiences as well as sections of non-Indian viewers interested in mythological storytelling. By August 18, Mahavatar Narasimha had already crossed the USD 1.6 million milestone, underlining the steady pace of its box office journey . The subsequent days pushed the film to its current USD 1.75 million tally, with weekend footfalls sustaining strongly even amidst stiff competition from star-driven juggernauts like Rajinikanth’s Coolie and the high-octane franchise offering War 2. In India, Mahavatar Narasimha has also been performing solidly as it became the 5th biggest hindi hit of the year beating Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par and its total collection today stands at Rs 225.4 crore. In a year dominated by big stars and franchises, Mahavatar Narasimha stands out as a testament to the power of stories that go beyond spectacle, resonating with audiences on the most fundamental human level.
