Tata Motors’ new manufacturing facility in Tamil Nadu is among the first in the country capable of producing both luxury vehicles and electric cars at scale, Industries Minister T R B Rajaa said on Tuesday. The plant at Ranipet began production on February 9, highlighting the state government’s focus on spreading industrial growth beyond traditional centres.

Chief Minister M K Stalin inaugurated the Tata Motors facility at Panapakkam in Ranipet district on Monday and drove the first Range Rover Evoque manufactured at the unit. In a social media post, Rajaa described the inauguration of the Tata Motors–Jaguar Land Rover plant as a proud moment for the state.

The minister said the ₹9,000 crore investment was completed from groundbreaking to operations within 16 months, despite global trade uncertainty and disruptions in the automobile sector. He attributed the project’s progress to the trust between Tata Motors and the Tamil Nadu government.

Rajaa said the choice of Ranipet reflected the government’s commitment to distributed growth, adding that large investments should strengthen regions beyond established hubs to create new employment centres. He noted that several diploma holders from Ranipet and other parts of the state have been recruited for the plant after undergoing training at a Tata facility in Pune.

He said the project was a result of stable governance, clear policies and execution under the leadership of Chief Minister M K Stalin, and added that Tamil Nadu would continue to attract and quickly operationalise major manufacturing investments.
