India is charting a new and ambitious course in its space journey, with a goal to launch over 100 satellites by 2040, according to Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh. Speaking on National Space Day, the minister unveiled a comprehensive 15-year roadmap for the space sector, which marks a significant shift toward greater collaboration between government and private entities.

This initiative is a strategic move to leverage space technology for crucial national objectives. The minister stressed that these satellites will serve to enhance food and water security, bolster disaster resilience, and promote environmental sustainability and inclusive growth. By integrating space-based applications into everyday governance, India aims to improve its public welfare and developmental programmes, from infrastructure monitoring to smart city planning and land ownership mapping using drones.

The roadmap reflects the government’s commitment to empowering the private sector. Singh noted that the space sector is no longer confined to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) but has become a dynamic ecosystem with hundreds of startups and private companies. These private players, with their innovative and agile approaches, are now key partners in missions, a model that will be crucial for achieving the 100+ satellite target. Approximately 70% of the planned launches are small satellites, which are well-suited for development by private firms.

By fostering a synergistic relationship between government expertise and private innovation, India is positioning itself as a reliable and cost-effective provider of space-based solutions for the world.
