A 21-year-old college student sustained grievous facial injuries after being mauled by stray dogs while returning home on August 20, said officials.

The attack left her with multiple bite wounds, and doctors had to administer 17 stitches on her cheek and nose.

The victim, identified as Vaishnavi Sahu, a final-year BBA student at Allen House Ruma College, was walking through Shyam Nagar when a fight broke out between stray dogs and monkeys.

In the commotion, three dogs suddenly attacked her.

According to eyewitnesses, the animals dragged her to the ground, biting her face and body. Her right cheek was torn into two parts, while her nose and limbs bore multiple injuries.

Despite her efforts to escape, the dogs overpowered her again and flung her onto the road.

Hearing her cries, locals rushed with sticks and managed to drive the dogs away.

By then, Vaishnavi was bleeding heavily. She was immediately taken to Kanshiram Hospital by her family members, where doctors stitched her wounds.

Her uncle, Ashutosh, recounted, “Vaishnavi, the daughter of my late brother Virendra Swaroop Sahu, was returning from college when this terrifying incident happened.”

Family members said the young woman is unable to eat or move her mouth due to her injuries. “She cannot eat anything, nor move her mouth. Somehow, we are giving her liquids through a straw,” they said.

The family demanded urgent intervention from authorities.

“The government must do something about these dogs. Either catch them and take them away or keep them in shelters. But they should be removed from the streets so that no one else’s daughter or daughter-in-law suffers like this,” they said.

The incident comes at a time when the Supreme Court’s directions on sterilisation and relocation of stray dogs continue to trigger nationwide debate and public concern.
