In a shocking incident, four friends from Uttar Pradesh narrowly escaped death after their car, guided by Google Maps, plunged into a pond in Saharanpur.
The incident took place on Thursday within the limits of the Sarsawa police station when the four friends —Surya, Aditya, Anuj, and Ashutosh —all students of Meerut University —were on their way to Shahabad in Ambala from Meerut to visit the Maharishi Markandeshwar temple, news agency PTI reported.

The youths, relying on Google Maps for navigation, turned their car onto a road near the Sirohi Palace that led straight into a pond, officials said.
“As they did not know the route, they were following Google Maps. On reaching near Sirohi Palace, the car turned towards the waterbody and plunged into the pond. Fortunately, none of them suffered any injury,” local SHO Vinod Kumar told news agency PTI.
The official said that all four people managed to escape the car through the windows, and then they informed the police.
“All four managed to save themselves by escaping from the sinking car through the windows. They immediately informed the police on Dial-112,” he added.
Police immediately rushed to the spot, checked on the health of the victims and arranged for the car to be pulled out, the SHO said. The car floated nearly 50 metres into the pond before being retrieved.
The youths were later sent to their destination after their vehicle was examined.
Police have advised travellers to exercise caution and not rely solely on digital navigation.
“This incident has proved that while Google Maps is useful, one should also keep an alternative in mind,” Kumar said.
In a similar incident last month, a woman in Navi Mumbai accidentally drove her car into a creek near Belapur when she was on her way to Ulwe. As per the report, instead of guiding her to the proper bridge, the navigation app reportedly directed her to a route beneath the bridge leading to the Dhruvatara Jetty. Unaware of the danger, the woman continued on the path and ended up driving into the water.
