‘Naseerudin Shah is an agnostic maybe,’ says his son Vivaan Shah

'Naseerudin Shah is an agnostic maybe,' says his son Vivaan Shah: 'Before exams, we always used to go to Ajmer Sharif'

Naseeruddin Shah is known for always being vocal about his opinions without any hesitation. From critiquing films and actors to voicing his views on socio-political matters, the veteran actor has never shied away from expressing his views. However, one subject he has largely kept private is his personal belief system about God and religion. That silence was recently addressed by his son, actor Vivaan Shah, during a conversation. When Vivaan was asked if his father is an aethist, Vivaan said in an interview with Bollywood Bubble, “You know, this is a really good question, and I really don’t know.” He also spoke about what might seem like a contradiction, Naseeruddin Shah’s visits to the Ajmer Sharif Dargah despite possibly not being a believer. Elaborating on this, Vivaan shared further, “Absolutely. Actually, before exams, we always used to go to Ajmer Sharif. I used to go to pray that I would get good marks. But it is an interesting question, and I should ask him, because I have never heard him directly talk about this. In fact, on this topic, he has not expressed any view that is definitive.”Vivaan further reflected on how uncertainty around faith is not uncommon and that many people exist in a space between belief and disbelief. Drawing a parallel to his father, he concluded, “So with my father, it is something like that. I would say he is maybe agnostic, perhaps.”
