Parvathy on suicidal thoughts and how EMDR changed her life

Parvathy Thiruvothu on loneliness, suicidal thoughts and how EMDR therapy changed her life, ‘My situation was beyond anyone’s help’

Parvathy Thiruvothu has spoken candidly about her mental health journey, revealing that she went through a deeply distressing phase marked by loneliness, trauma and suicidal thoughts before therapy finally began to work for her.In an interview with Hauterrfly, the actress reflected on the trial-and-error process of finding the right therapist, admitting that while therapy has been one of the best decisions of her life, choosing the wrong professional can be damaging.

‘I had many bad experiences’

Parvathy revealed that her initial attempts at therapy were far from smooth. “Till I found my current therapist, I had to endure many bad experiences,” she said, adding that it was particularly difficult to find someone who did not treat her as a public figure.“My first therapist was from the United States, so the sessions used to happen around 1–2 am. Among Indian therapists, there were some red flags because they know about the loopholes within our culture. All this is very painful,” she shared. The actress stressed that these experiences made her realise how crucial it is to find the right therapist. “Therapy was the best decision of my life, but a wrong therapist may worsen the situation,” she admitted.

‘I also experienced suicidal thoughts’

Opening up about one of the darkest phases of her life, Parvathy said there was a time when loneliness consumed her. “There was a time when I felt very lonely. I kept telling my friends that I’m trying new therapists but nothing seems to be working out,” she recalled. She went on to make a deeply personal revelation, saying, “I used to think that my situation was beyond anyone’s help. Circumstances were distressing during those times. At times, I also experienced suicidal thoughts.”Recalling the period around early 2021, she added, “During January–February 2021, I can’t clearly recall. When I look at my phone’s gallery, I can remember what exactly happened. After that, therapy started working out for me.”

‘EMDR therapy changed my life’

Parvathy said her healing journey took a positive turn once she began the right kind of treatment. “Now I am taking two kinds of therapies. The first one is EMDR (Eye Movement Digitisation and Processing), which changed my life, and now I have a trauma-informed therapist,” she said.Explaining its impact, the actor added, “EMDR is helping me with mental strength and the feeling of shame within my body. I also have a sex therapist. So now my plate is full—work, friends, family and efforts to rediscover myself through this process.”Reflecting on personal growth, she noted, “People often say that humans come closer to themselves after 30 and their perspective on relationships changes. Life feels more fulfilling and balanced.”

Work front

Parvathy was also seen alongside the late Irrfan Khan in Qarib Qarib Singlle (2017). She recently wrapped up shooting for the Malayalam film I, Nobody, co-starring Prithviraj Sukumaran. Go to Source
