Priyanka Chopra’s Golden Globes role spotlights advocacy

Priyanka Chopra’s Golden Globes appearance recalls her pre-Oscars night celebrating ‘RRR’

At the Golden Globes, Priyanka Chopra dazzled the audience as she joined forces with Lisa Manobal to present an award. This event brought back the excitement from her pre-Oscars gala, where she passionately advocated for South Asian artistry.

Priyanka Chopra returned to the global spotlight today as she made her third appearance at the Golden Globes Awards, stepping back onto one of Hollywood’s biggest stages. The actor presented the award for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Series Drama alongside global pop star Lalisa Manobal. Together, they announced Noah Wyle as the winner for ‘The Pitt.’ Chopra stood out at the ceremony and sparked fresh interest in an earlier awards season, when she used her visibility during the Oscars period to spotlight South Asian talent on a global platform.

A look back at a pre-Oscars night that stood out

Ahead of the 2023 Academy Awards, she hosted an Oscars-week evening in Los Angeles, with Indian cinema enjoying a rare surge of global attention. The timing came soon after ‘RRR’ earned a Best Song nod for ‘Naatu Naatu.’ It was also her second year in a row doing it, turning the event into an annual pre-Oscars meet.

Chopra hosted the annual South Asian Excellence pre-Oscars bash in Los Angeles. The guest list ranged from film stars to global voices. Ram Charan attended with Upasana, joined by Preity Zinta, Malala Yousafzai, Guneet Monga, Shaunak Sen, Jacqueline Fernandez, and Mindy Kaling. The night kept the spotlight on South Asian nominees and creators in a year when their work drew rare Oscars attention. Nick Jonas publicly praised Chopra’s efforts and shared his thoughts on social media. “So proud of my incredible wife for putting this event on for the second year in a row to celebrate South Asian Excellence during Oscar’s week. Met so many amazing people and got to celebrate the remarkable South Asian nominees this year at Hollywood’s biggest night,” he wrote. For the event, Chopra wore an all-white ensemble featuring a fur jacket, a corset top, and a mermaid-inspired skirt.

Why that Oscar season mattered

India had a strong showing that Oscars year. ‘Naatu Naatu’ from ‘RRR’ picked up a Best Song nomination. Two documentaries also got in, Shaunak Sen’s ‘All That Breathes’ and ‘The Elephant Whisperers.’ Together, they signalled growing global interest in Indian stories.Speaking about the gathering’s intent, Chopra kept the spotlight on the nominees. “This night is about the nominees, and you see a lot of them coming. This will be about giving them the stage and giving them a moment. Showcasing a little bit of the movies and championing them as the Oscars come back,” she said.As she steps back onto major international award stages like the Golden Globes, it shows, once again, how she has long used her voice and visibility to champion South Asian presence in global cinema.
