Neena Gupta says men don’t consider strong women as marriage material

Neena Gupta says men don't consider a strong woman as marriage material: 'It’s true about 95 percent of our population'

Neena Gupta has always been known for her unfiltered honesty, as she’s also broken several stereotypes, taken some bold decisions. Apart from that, Neena is often vocal about her opinions on the conditioning of the society and patriarchy. In a recent interview, as Gupta spoke about marriage and love, she said that in general, men do not like strong women and don’t prefer them for marriage. She said in an interview with Humans Of Bombay, “A strong woman is not marriage material. Men don’t like strong women, most of them,” before elaborating, “They like helpless women. They hate strong women, or women who have their own thoughts, women who work, who are committed to their own careers. They hate that. They want power over women. I’m speaking in general terms, not about everyone. But it’s true about 95% of our population. I’m not saying this to make a controversial statement, but it’s something I have observed in my own household and in society.”During the same conversation, the veteran actor also revisited a deeply hurtful experience from her past. She revealed that she had once been engaged, only for the wedding to be abruptly called off, leaving her heartbroken. “I was engaged to one guy who ditched me at the last minute. We had exchanged rings, I was engaged. I had gone to buy my wedding clothes to Delhi and then he says, ‘abhi shadi nai karni’. He said, ‘mujhe sinus ka operation karaana hai. I said sinus ka operation to baadmein bhi ho sakta hai.’ (He told me he wants to undergo a sinus operation). Uske mummy, papa, sabko maine pucha, why he doesn’t want to get married and till today I don’t know),” she said. Gupta further added, “He came to me after 6months and said let’s marry, I said ‘f**k off’ now I don’t want. Even then I asked the reason. Then he wanted to marry me but didn’t tell me the reason. So, we don’t know circumstances, we make decisions majboori mein. Let’s not judge people based on their decisions.”
