At just 18 years old, Fatima Abdulrahman Al Awadhi has proven that no horizon is too distant and no climate too harsh for the spirit of the UAE. On Tuesday, January 6, 2026, the young Emirati mountaineer etched her name into the history books by reaching the summit of Mount Vinson, the highest peak in Antarctica. Standing at a staggering 4,892 meters, Al Awadhi is now officially the youngest person and the first Arab to conquer this formidable icy giant at her age. This was not just a personal victory; it was a moment of national pride. Upon reaching the top, she unfurled the UAE flag against a backdrop of endless white, dedicating her achievement to President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Mother of the Nation.

What is Mount Vinson?

Mount Vinson, located in the far reaches of Antarctica, is one of the Seven Summits, the highest peaks on each continent, and is renowned for its extreme cold, isolation and fierce winds. Temperatures during the expedition plunged well below −40°C, and the journey through vast icefields required exceptional endurance, self-reliance and resilience.Al Awadhi’s climb lasted up to three weeks in harsh polar conditions, confronting not only the physical threat of cold but also the mental challenge of isolation and relentless weather.

Meet Fatima Al Awadhi

Fatima Abdulrahman Al Awadhi is an 18-year-old Emirati mountaineer who is rapidly emerging as one of the Arab world’s most promising young explorers. Known for her discipline, mental strength and passion for extreme environments, Fatima represents a new generation of Emirati youth pushing boundaries far beyond conventional paths. Her Antarctic summit is not a one-off achievement, it is part of a carefully planned high-altitude climbing journey that began years earlier. Her previous major climbs and achievements:

  • Mount Vinson (Antarctica) – In January 2026, she became the youngest Arab and first Emirati woman to reach Antarctica’s highest point at 4,892 metres, enduring extreme cold, isolation and polar conditions.

A national message

Upon reaching the peak, Fatima Al Awadhi dedicated her historic feat to UAE leaders, including President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, in gratitude for their support in empowering Emirati youth and women. She described the moment as not merely about conquering a mountain, but about symbolising what Emiratis can achieve with vision, support, and courage, reinforcing a message of national pride and possibility for future generations.Fatima’s achievement is more than a mountaineering triumph; it highlights how Gulf nations are nurturing excellence in areas far beyond traditional arenas, supporting their youth to succeed on the global stage of exploration and adventure sports. Through strong sponsorships and national programmes that empower young talent, the UAE continues to build a legacy of aspiration, resilience, and achievement. Go to Source
