‘She used to give constant feedback while I composed songs’: Anu Malik opens up on his first collaboration with Hema Malini in ‘Maarg’

Music composer and singer Anu Malik has opened up about his early professional journey and his first association with veteran actress and politician Hema Malini during the film ‘Maarg’. He noted that the project marked the beginning of a meaningful creative connection that would continue in later years.

Anu Malik on his continued partnership and ‘Awaargi’

Anu Malik shared in an interview with IANS that their collaboration did not end with ‘Maarg’, as they later worked together on ‘Awaargi’, a film produced by Hema Malini herself. He recalled that the experience allowed him to engage more closely with her vision as a producer while shaping the film’s musical identity.

Creative feedback from Hema Malini

Speaking about his working experience, the composer highlighted how involved Hema Malini was during the music-making process and how her feedback influenced his work. He said, “My first association with Hema Ji was in the film ‘Maarg’. Then we did ‘Awaargi’ together, which was again produced by Hema Ji. She has inspired me so much. She used to give constant feedback while I composed the songs.” He further mentioned that her appreciation for his work in ‘Ek Chadar Maili Si’ remained a memorable moment in his career. Malik added a strong personal admiration, stating, “There will never be a more beautiful person than Hema Malini,” he concluded.

Memories with Dharmendra and Sunny Deol

Anu Malik also spoke about his longstanding relationship with the Deol family, describing a warm bond with Dharmendra and Sunny Deol over the years. He recalled that his association with Sunny Deol also extended to professional collaborations in cinema. He said, “I had always enjoyed an extremely homely relationship with Dharam Ji (Dharmendra). I have been very close to Sunny (Deol). I even gave the music for his second movie, ‘Sohni Mahiwal’.”Sharing deeper personal memories, Anu Malik spoke about Dharmendra’s fondness for his compositions and the informal rapport they shared. He remembered how the veteran actor appreciated both lively and melodious tracks, and how their interactions often extended beyond professional spaces. He added, “Dharam Ji was very fond of my music. In fact, I once came up with a playful number, ‘Pal Pal Na Mane Tinku Jiya’, and Dharam Ji, being extremely joyful himself, used to love that song. He also loved my melodious numbers. He used to treat me, just like a family member, hence we used to meet very often.”Anu Malik’s previous full-length musical work is the romantic drama film ‘Tu Meri Poori Kahani’. Go to Source
