Karisma Kapoor and Abhishek Bachchan publicly had confirmed their relationship during Amitabh Bachchan’s 60th birthday celebration in 2002, with their engagement taking place shortly afterward. However, the engagement ended in early 2003, only a few months later. Despite years of speculation, neither the Kapoor family nor the Bachchan family has ever publicly disclosed the reason behind their separation. There has been a dignified silence on the matter and now Abhishek is happily married to Aishwarya Rai since 2007. However, now, filmmaker Suneel Darshan who had directed the duo in ‘Haan Maine Bhi Pyaar Kiya Hai’ has now revealed that Karisma went to Bangkok for New Year’s eve after they broke up and suddenly he heard the news of her marrying Sunjay Kapoor.Darshan spoke about his close association with Karisma during that period. Having directed her in films including ‘Jaanwar’, ‘Ek Rishtaa: The Bond of Love’, and ‘Haan Maine Bhi Pyaar Kiya’, he witnessed her relationship with Abhishek evolve over the years. Recalling that phase, Darshan said the couple had already made plans to marry by the time ‘Haan Maine Bhi Pyaar Kiya’ went on floors. He said in an interview with Hindi Rush, “Their relationship had started even before Ek Rishtaa began and it kept growing deeper. By the time I planned Haan Maine Bhi Pyaar Kiya, it had already been decided that they would get married. They were an attractive pair — Amitabh Bachchan’s son and Raj Kapoor’s granddaughter. Ironically, the only film they were destined to do together was Haan Maine Bhi Pyaar Kiya.”The filmmaker also remembered the day the engagement was called off, revealing that he happened to be at Karisma’s home when the development took place.“Coincidentally, I was at Karisma’s house when the engagement was called off. It’s unfortunate that the wedding was called off. I don’t think anyone can fully analyse the backlash or emotional turmoil that followed. Then she went to Bangkok for New Year’s celebrations, and suddenly I heard she was going to marry Sunjay. I never understood that decision.”Addressing the long-standing speculation surrounding the breakup, Darshan said he does not believe any one individual should be held responsible. According to him, relationships are deeply personal, and outsiders cannot fully understand the circumstances behind them.“People blame Babita ji, Jaya ji, Karisma or Abhishek, but I think these things should be left to destiny. They had a fiery relationship. Love manifests differently for different couples, and every relationship has its own dynamic. There were a lot of disagreements between the two.”Later that year, on September 29, 2003, Karisma married businessman Sunjay Kapur in a Sikh wedding ceremony. The couple welcomed two children, Samaira and Kiaan, before eventually parting ways. Their divorce was finalized in 2016 following a lengthy legal process. In 2017, Sunjay married former model Priya Sachdev, and the couple welcomed a son, Azarias. Sunjay Kapur passed away on June 12, 2025, in England while playing polo at the age of 53. He was married to Priya Sachdev at the time of his death. Go to Source
