Veteran Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan, now 82, has candidly shared insights into the challenges of ageing through a recent blog post. With characteristic honesty and a touch of humour, the legendary actor reflected on how even the simplest daily tasks now require caution and adjustment.

Why Even Putting On Trousers Needs Care

Amitabh Bachchan shared that he now needs to be mindful even when putting on his trousers, a task once done effortlessly. He wrote: “Doctors advise: do not stand while wearing trousers. Sit down instead, or you may lose balance and fall. This used to happen automatically before, but now it requires special attention.”

To aid mobility around his residence, Jalsa, handlebars have been installed. In a light-hearted tone, he added that even picking up a newspaper has become a task.

He reminded his readers that these experiences may not seem relevant now, but with time, everyone will come to understand them.

Why Amitabh Bachchan Described Age As A ‘Speed Breaker’?

Describing the slowing down that comes with age, Amitabh Bachchan likened it to hitting a speed breaker. He noted that while youth rushes ahead at full speed, ageing naturally puts the brakes on.

He commented on how his routine has changed drastically: “Early meals – early to bed. It’s not just a saying; it actually works.”

His daily schedule now revolves around medication, light activity, and maintaining bodily balance through yoga, pranayama, and gym sessions.

Expert Insight: Why Ageing Affects Routine Tasks?

According to the Indian Express, Dr Anup Khatri, Senior Orthopaedic Consultant at Gleneagles Hospital, Mumbai, explained that at the age of 80 and beyond, muscle weakness, joint stiffness, and balance issues are common.

Tasks that once seemed simple, such as buttoning a shirt, climbing stairs, or doing light household chores, can become physically demanding.

Dr Khatri’s advice includes:

  • Regular light exercise, stretching, and chair yoga
  • Using supportive shoes, handrails, or walking aids
  • Taking breaks between tasks
  • Considering occupational therapy and physiotherapy for safer mobility

He emphasised that with the right support and activity, elderly people can continue to live independent and confident lives.

A Reminder To Prepare For The Future

Amitabh Bachchan’s reflections go beyond personal anecdotes. His blog post is a thoughtful reminder to accept ageing with grace, awareness, and adaptation.

By sharing his own journey, he encourages others, young and old, to respect the ageing process and plan for a time when strength and balance are no longer taken for granted.
