A tragic incident has emerged from Badaun district in Uttar Pradesh, where a two-year-old child contracted rabies after a stray dog licked a wound on his leg. The family first noticed symptoms on August 16 when the boy reportedly began showing a fear of water and started panting with his tongue out. They rushed him to the hospital, but he sadly passed away on August 18.

The child’s father, Mohammad Anees, explained, “His condition worsened the next day, so we took him to the community health centre, but he died on Monday.” Anees recounted, “My son was playing outside when he got hurt and blood started oozing from his leg. Then a stray dog licked that wound. We did not know that it could be so dangerous.”

The incident has sparked fear among the villagers, leading about 30 people to get rabies injections following the child’s death. Villagers believe that had the family known the risks, the child would have been vaccinated in time and his life could have been saved.

Dr. Prashant Tyagi, Medical Superintendent of Badaun District Hospital, commented on the incident, emphasising, “This incident shows that dog bites or licks should not be taken lightly as they can cause rabies. If a dog, cat, or monkey bites or licks, a rabies vaccine should be taken immediately. Ignoring it can be fatal.”
