The Delhi Police on Wednesday said a 47-year-old man murdered his wife over suspicions of an affair and buried her body in a Mehrauli cemetery with the help of his associates, in a chilling crime reminiscent of the plot of the Bollywood movie Drishyam.

The accused, identified as Shadab Ali, a painter from Uttar Pradesh’s Amroha, allegedly forced his wife, Fatima, to consume pesticides and sedatives over several days before she died on August 1.

According to police, Shadab then transported the body in a car, assisted by his friends Shahrukh Khan and Tanveer, and secretly buried her in a graveyard, reported NDTV.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Ankit Chauhan said the accused attempted to cover up the crime by discarding Fatima’s clothes in a canal and sending himself a message from her phone claiming she had “eloped to marry someone else.”

He then fled to Amroha, hoping to mislead investigators.

The case surfaced after a missing person’s complaint was lodged on August 10 at Mehrauli police station by one of Fatima’s friends, who suspected she had been kidnapped.

CCTV footage later recovered by police showed Fatima with her husband and his aides, appearing unconscious, which turned the suspicion on Shadab.

Initially, Shadab denied involvement, claiming he had dumped the body in a canal.

However, under sustained interrogation, he confessed to the murder, citing his wife’s alleged extramarital affair as the motive.

Investigators said he had confined Fatima to a house in Fatehpur Beri for nearly a week, forcing her to ingest pesticides while she remained semi-conscious.

On the night of August 2, Shadab and his aides allegedly shifted the body to the cemetery and buried it.

Following his confession, police exhumed Fatima’s remains on August 15 in the presence of a Sub-Divisional Magistrate.

Shadab, Shahrukh, and Tanveer have been arrested, while another accomplice is absconding. Police have also seized the vehicle used in the crime.
