23.96 lakh houses installed with rooftop solar systems: Minister

NEW DELHI: Nearly 24 lakh households in the country have so far been provided with rooftop solar systems under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSG: MBY), Union minister of state for new and renewable energy Shripad Yesso Naik informed the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.Replying to a separate question, the minister said the scheme aims to achieve rooftop solar installations in one crore households in the residential sector by FY 2026-27 with an outlay of Rs 75,021 crore.The minister said that as of December 3, 2025, a total of 53,54,099 applications had been received on the national portal and 19,17,698 rooftop solar systems had been installed across the country, covering 23,96,497 households.“The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is a demand-driven scheme, wherein all residential consumers in the country having a grid-connected electricity connection of local discoms can avail the benefits of the scheme by applying on the national portal,” the minister said in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha.Naik informed the House that against the target of covering one crore households in the residential sector with rooftop solar systems under the scheme by FY 2026-27, a total of 23,96,497 households had been provided with the systems. He said a total of 7,075.78 MW of rooftop solar capacity has been installed in the country under the scheme.He added that the ministry has prescribed minimum technical specifications and standards for solar modules, inverters, and other balance-of-plant components to ensure quality and reliability. “The installations are inspected by local discom officials. In addition, vendors have to mandatorily maintain the plant for a period of five years from the date of commissioning. Adequate checks have been built into the scheme to ensure the quality of solar panels,” the minister stated, adding that a third-party assessment of installations is conducted on at least 1% of the installed systems.
