Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) opened fire on a container ship in the Strait of Hormuz after it allegedly ignored repeated warnings, according to Iranian state-linked media.
The country’s semi-official Tasnim News Agency reported that Iranian forces enforced “maritime law” against the vessel, in an incident that unfolded just hours after US President Donald Trump announced an extension of the ceasefire with Tehran.
Vessel Targeted Near Oman Coast
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) confirmed it had received a report of an incident involving a container ship around 15 nautical miles (28 kilometres) northeast of Oman, Al Jazeera reported.
According to the UKMTO, the ship’s master reported that an IRGC gunboat approached the vessel before opening fire.
Heavy Damage, Crew Safe
The gunfire caused significant damage to the ship’s bridge, though no fires or environmental impact were reported. All crew members were confirmed safe, the UKMTO added.
