US President Donald Trump’s intense focus on Kharg Island stems from its role as Iran’s economic jugular. As the source of nearly 950 million barrels of oil exports annually, it generates approximately $73 trillion (INR) in energy revenue for Iran. By targeting Kharg, Trump aims for two strategic victories: seizing control of global oil supply chains and crippling China’s energy imports, as Beijing is the primary buyer of Kharg’s oil. Military experts describe Kharg, along with Qeshm and Hormuz, as Iran’s “Water Arms.” While the US has already targeted Qeshm’s missile centers, reports suggest a “Boots on the Ground” plan to occupy Kharg. Currently, over 2,200 paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne and 5,000 Marines are stationed in the Middle East awaiting orders. However, the mission is fraught with risk. Iran views Kharg as its “Crown” and is expected to fight “tooth and nail.” With 13 US soldiers already killed in the conflict, Trump faces a high-stakes gamble: securing Iranian oil wealth versus the political cost of more American casualties.
