India has officially launched its campaign to become a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2028–29 term. The campaign was inaugurated by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar at the United Nations headquarters in New York. During the launch, Jaishankar emphasized that the world is facing a period of deep contradictions, marked by unprecedented opportunities for development and technological advancement alongside rising levels of conflict, violence, and instability. He said these challenges threaten countries across regions, making the role of the United Nations and the Security Council more important than ever. Jaishankar called on the UN to take a leading role in addressing global complexities and urged the Security Council to demonstrate effective leadership in maintaining international peace and security. He stated that, if elected, India would focus on promoting a secure, peaceful, and equitable world while ensuring that the voices of the Global South receive equal attention in international decision-making. India’s campaign reflects its broader commitment to multilateral cooperation, inclusive global governance, and strengthening the effectiveness of international institutions.
