India Announces Second-Largest Stadium For Live Cricket Matches

India already hosts world’s largest cricket stadium, the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, which can hold an astonishing 132,000 spectators at once. Now, Navi Mumbai is set to join the list of mega cricket venues with the construction of a new stadium capable of accommodating 100,000 fans simultaneously.

As per reports, this decision came after discussions between Ajinkya Naik, President of Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), and Vijay Singhal, Managing Director of CIDCO.

Capable Of Hosting 100,000 Spectators

The new stadium is expected to overshadow Mumbai’s current largest venue, Wankhede Stadium, which has a seating capacity of 33,000. Ajinkya Naik emphasized that a 100,000-seat arena would not only elevate cricket in Mumbai but also enhance Maharashtra’s profile on the global sporting stage.

Until now, Narendra Modi Stadium was the only venue in India capable of hosting 100,000 or more spectators and continues to hold the record as the largest cricket stadium in the world.

Once completed, Navi Mumbai stadium will become India’s second-largest cricket ground, surpassing Kolkata’s iconic Eden Gardens, which seats 68,000.

Mumbai already boasts several historic cricket venues, including the Wankhede, Brabourne, and DY Patil stadiums, but this new facility is expected to host international matches and high-profile tournaments in the near future.

Globally, only two stadiums can host more than 100,000 spectators for a cricket match: Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad and the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in Australia, which has a seating capacity of 100,024. Before Narendra Modi Stadium was built, the MCG held the distinction of being the world’s largest cricket stadium for many years.
