Axar Patel Breaks Partnership, Fakhar Zaman Sent Packing

Pakistan’s hopes of a steady rebuild suffered a blow when Fakhar Zaman’s aggressive intent backfired against Axar Patel.

Looking to break free, Fakhar advanced down the track to take on the left-arm spinner, but Axar cleverly pushed the ball wider from around the wicket. The mistimed lofted shot went high in the air, and Tilak Varma, stationed at long-on, judged it perfectly to complete a safe catch.

It was a much-needed strike for India, coming at a crucial stage when Fakhar was threatening to build momentum. Axar’s discipline and smart variation ensured Pakistan’s progress was checked once again in this high-voltage clash at Dubai.

Since 2021, Fakhar Zaman has often struggled when charging down the pitch against spinners. He averages only 13 in such scenarios, with eight dismissals – the second-highest tally for any batter from a Full Member nation after Rahmanullah Gurbaz. Interestingly, before this lean phase, Fakhar had scored 80 runs off 37 deliveries while coming down the track, losing his wicket just once.

India’s explosive start

India made an explosive start in the Asia Cup 2025 clash, with Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah striking in the first two overs to dismiss Saim Ayub and Mohammad Haris.

Earlier, Pakistan skipper Salman Ali Agha had opted to bat first after winning the toss, while both teams stuck with the same XIs from their previous outings.

The atmosphere around this high-voltage encounter is charged as always, but this time the backdrop feels heavier.

With the Indian government recently permitting the BCCI to participate despite heightened tensions following Operation Sindoor, the build-up to the match has been filled with political noise and divided opinions back home. Still, as the two arch-rivals take the field in Dubai, the cricketing action is set to dominate the spotlight.

India playing XI: Abhishek Sharma, Shubman Gill, Suryakumar Yadav (c), Tilak Varma, Sanju Samson (wk), Shivam Dube, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Varun Chakaravarthy.
