Cheese is one of the most popular food items enjoyed worldwide. From pizza and pasta to salads, it adds both taste and aroma to dishes. Usually, cheese is made from the milk of cows, buffaloes, goats, or sheep. But did you know that the world’s most expensive cheese is not made from any of these animals? Instead, it is made from donkey milk, an animal often linked with foolishness in India. This rare cheese is called Pule Cheese.

Where Is Pule Cheese made?

Recommended Stories

Pule Cheese is produced only in Serbia, at the Jasavica Special Nature Reserve. It is made using a mix of milk from Balkan donkeys and goats, with about 60% donkey milk and 40% goat milk.

How Much Does Pule Cheese Cost?

One of the main reasons for its high price is the limited quantity of donkey milk. A Balkan donkey produces only about 300 ml of milk per day, whereas several litres are needed to make cheese. On top of that, the process of making cheese from donkey milk is highly complex, requiring immense skill and effort. According to reports, Pule Cheese is sold for around $1,000 to $1,500 per kg, which is roughly Rs 83,000 to Rs 1,24,000.

Taste And Use

Unlike regular cheese, Pule Cheese has a distinctive taste. It is slightly salty, thick in texture, and aromatic. In Serbia, it is considered a delicacy and is served only on special occasions.
