ABP LIVE Doc Talk | High-Risk Pregnancy: 10 Warning Signs You Should Never Ignore

Pregnancy is one of the most exciting phases in a woman’s life, filled with hope and anticipation. While most pregnancies progress normally, some require closer medical supervision due to an increased risk of complications. A high-risk pregnancy does not mean that something will definitely go wrong; it simply indicates that the mother, the baby, or both need additional monitoring and specialized care to ensure a safe pregnancy and delivery. With advances in maternal healthcare, early diagnosis, regular antenatal check-ups, and timely intervention, most women with high-risk pregnancies go on to deliver healthy babies. The key lies in recognizing risk factors early and never ignoring warning signs.

What Is a High-Risk Pregnancy?

  • Several medical conditions and pregnancy-related factors can increase the likelihood of complications. A pregnancy may be classified as high risk if the expectant mother has:
  • High blood pressure or develops preeclampsia
  • Diabetes, either pre-existing or gestational diabetes
  • Thyroid, kidney, or heart disease
  • Autoimmune disorders such as lupus
  • A history of recurrent miscarriages, stillbirth, or preterm birth
  • A multiple pregnancy, such as twins or triplets
  • Maternal age below 18 years or above 35 years
  • Obesity or severe anemia

It is equally important to remember that complications can sometimes arise even in women with previously healthy pregnancies. This is why regular antenatal care is essential for every expectant mother, regardless of her medical history.

Warning Signs That Should Never Be Ignored

  • Pregnancy-related complications often present with warning symptoms that require immediate medical evaluation. Expectant mothers should seek urgent medical attention if they experience:
  • Severe headache that does not improve with rest
  • Blurred vision or seeing flashes of light
  • Sudden swelling of the face, hands, or feet
  • Heavy vaginal bleeding
  • Leakage of fluid from the vagina before labour
  • Severe abdominal pain or persistent contractions
  • Reduced or absent fetal movements after the baby has started moving regularly
  • High fever
  • Breathlessness or chest pain
  • Convulsions or loss of consciousness

These symptoms should never be ignored or postponed until the next scheduled appointment. Early medical intervention can prevent serious complications and improve outcomes for both mother and baby.

Why Regular Antenatal Visits Are So Important

Routine antenatal visits are much more than a standard pregnancy check-up. They provide valuable opportunities to detect potential complications before they become serious.
During these visits, healthcare providers monitor blood pressure, assess the baby’s growth and development, perform essential blood investigations and ultrasound examinations, review medications, and identify any emerging health concerns. They also help determine the safest timing and mode of delivery based on the mother’s condition and the baby’s wellbeing.
Many pregnancy complications, including preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, fetal growth restriction, and anemia, can be effectively managed when detected early through regular prenatal care.

What Every Expectant Mother Can Do

  • Although not every complication can be prevented, adopting healthy habits and remaining vigilant can significantly reduce risks.
    Every pregnant woman should:
  • Attend all scheduled antenatal appointments without fail.
  • Take prescribed medicines, iron, calcium, and other supplements regularly.
  • Monitor fetal movements as advised by her obstetrician.
  • Eat a balanced, nutrient-rich diet and stay well hydrated.
  • Remain physically active if recommended by the treating doctor.
  • Avoid smoking, alcohol, and recreational drugs.
  • Identify the nearest emergency hospital and keep important medical records and emergency contact numbers readily accessible.
  • Simple preventive measures combined with regular medical supervision play a crucial role in ensuring a safer pregnancy.
