Ganpati Sthapana At Home: Ganesh Chaturthi, a 10-day festival celebrating Lord Ganesha, the deity of auspicious beginnings and remover of obstacles, will be observed this year on August 27, 2025. Lord Ganesha, the younger son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, is revered as the God of Knowledge, Arts, and Wisdom.

Preparations and Puja Essentials

Ganesh Chaturthi Puja Samagri includes:

  1. Ganesh Ji Murti
  2. Akshata (turmeric rice mix)
  3. Mango leaves and betel leaves
  4. Lamps, oil or ghee, and wicks
  5. Incense sticks and camphor
  6. Flowers, fruits, especially bananas
  7. Sandalwood paste, turmeric, saffron
  8. Modakams and pedestal
  9. Glass, plate, and Uddharini
  10. Red cloth pieces for decoration

Before starting, clean the house thoroughly and decorate it with lights and flowers. Wake up early, take a holy bath, and involve all family members to share puja duties.

Step 1: Selecting the Ganesh Idol

Devotees may use an existing idol, make one from clay or turmeric, or purchase a new idol from shops or pandals. Many families prefer buying a new eco-friendly murti every year for the 10-day celebration.

Step 2: Setting Up the Altar

Place the Ganesh idol on an elevated platform or traditional puja altar. Decorate the pedestal with a clean cloth, draw rangoli, and arrange flowers and lights around the idol.

Step 3: Ganesh Puja Rituals

  1. Lighting Lamps and Incense: Begin with oil lamps or ghee lamps and incense sticks.
  2. Avahana & Pratishthapana: Invoke the deity with mantras to bring the idol to life.

  10. Pushpa, Gandha & Sindoor: Decorate with flower garlands, sandal paste, and vermilion.
  11. Naivedya: Offer modaks, fruits, and sweets while chanting mantras.
  12. Neerajan/Aarti & Pradakshina: Perform Aarti and circumambulate the idol with devotion.

Number of Days and Visarjan

Families may keep the idol at home for 1.5, 3, 5, 7, 10, or 11 days, depending on tradition. On the final day, Anant Chaturthi, the idol is immersed in water (Visarjan) following Uttarang Puja and Aarti.

  1. Offer flowers, diyas, dhoop, and naivedya before Visarjan.
  2. Pour a spoonful of curd on the idol’s palm as a blessing ritual.
  3. Handle the idol so its face is toward the family, symbolising farewell blessings.
  4. Chant: “Ganpati Bappa Morya, Pudhchya Varshi Lavkar Ya” to complete the immersion.

The festival symbolises the removal of obstacles, joy, and prosperity. Devotees worship Lord Ganesha before initiating new ventures, marriages, or housewarming ceremonies. The 10-day celebration strengthens family bonds, devotion, and cultural connection.
