Ganesh Chaturthi Celebrations 2025: Ganesh Chaturthi, also called Ganeshotsav, Vinayaka Chaturthi, or Gowri Habba, is one of the most widely celebrated Hindu festivals. It marks the birth of Lord Ganesha, the elephant-headed god of wisdom, prosperity, and good fortune.

The festival lasts for 10 days, starting on the fourth day of the moon cycle, Chaturthi, when devotees install Ganesha idols in their homes and public spaces. The celebration concludes with the grand Visarjan, when the idols are immersed in rivers, lakes, or the sea, symbolising Ganesha’s return to his celestial abode.

The streets are filled with devotees chanting “Ganpati Bappa Morya” and “Mangal Murti Morya” as they participate in processions. Iconic pandals like Lalbaugcha Raja, Khetwadi Ganraj, and Andhericha Raja attract millions of visitors. The festival concludes with the immersion of idols in the Arabian Sea, turning the city into a vibrant hub of music, dance, and cultural performances.

Delhi

In Delhi, Ganesh Chaturthi showcases a blend of cultural practices from across India. Visitors can witness massive idols in some areas, while other locations focus on rituals and chants from the Vedas and Upanishads. Decorated pandals, cultural programs, and public celebrations create a lively atmosphere, reflecting the city’s cosmopolitan spirit.

Karnataka

Karnataka also celebrates Ganesh Chaturthi with traditional and ritualistic practices. The festival begins with prayers to Goddess Gauri, followed by installing Ganesha idols in homes and public pandals. People prepare sweets like modakam, gojju, and payasam, perform pujas, bhajans, and aartis, and take part in cultural events in cities like Bengaluru and Mysuru. The focus is on devotion, simplicity, and community celebrations, making it both a religious and cultural festival.

Pune

Homes and public pandals are decorated, devotees perform pujas, offer sweets like ladoos and modaks, and participate in traditional dances. The city attracts visitors from across the region who come to witness its vibrant festivities.

Hyderabad

Hyderabad’s Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated with great fervour. Large idols are installed in pandals, and devotees offer prayers and prepare special dishes like undrallu, kudumulu, and rice porridge. The famous Khairatabad mandal hosts one of the tallest Ganesha idols, reportedly sometimes reaching 60 feet, with a massive laddu offered in the Lord’s hand, drawing huge crowds.

Kolkata

While not as prominent in Kolkata, Ganesh Chaturthi is still celebrated with beautiful decorations and rituals, often blending with local traditions. Families and communities install idols, perform pujas, and engage in cultural activities, maintaining the festive spirit.

West Bengal, Odisha, and Gujarat

In West Bengal and Odisha, the festival is observed with zeal, especially in cities, with homes, businesses, and schools installing idols. Pujas and cultural programs follow traditional rites. In Gujarat, families celebrate at home with offerings like modaks, fruits, and coconuts, while public celebrations in cities like Ahmedabad and Surat include grand processions and temple prayers.
