With festivals knocking on our doors, it’s time for get-togethers, parties, and lots of fun. Why the Heart Feels Stressed During Festivals
Overindulgence in Sweets and Fried Foods: Desserts, fried snacks, and traditional mithai are integral to Indian festivities. Due to the high sugar, ghee, and refined flour content, blood sugar and cholesterol levels rise, ultimately affecting the heart and blood vessels.
Pollution and Firecrackers: Burning crackers significantly impacts air quality. Inhaling pollutants can trigger heart attacks, thicken the blood, and raise blood pressure, especially in people with pre-existing heart conditions.
Irregular Routines: Festivities often come with late-night parties, days of preparations, and shopping, disrupting sleep and routine. This can lead to cardiovascular issues and disturb the body’s natural rhythm.
Alcohol and Tobacco: Social drinking and smoking during parties can further increase the risk of heart-related problems.
How to Celebrate Wisely Without Harming Your Heart
Moderation is Key: Enjoy the festivities and treat yourself, but keep indulgences in moderation.
Balance Your Meals: Include fruits, nuts, salads, or curd to balance richer foods.
Stay Hydrated: Drinking water or lemon water helps counter the effects of salty and sugary foods.
Don’t Skip Walks: A 15–20 minute walk after meals aids digestion and keeps your heart healthy.
Mind Pollution: Wear a mask outdoors and keep windows closed at night to minimize exposure to smoke and pollutants.
Prioritize Sleep: Ensure 6–7 hours of quality sleep even during celebrations.
Limit Alcohol and Smoking: If indulging, keep it minimal.
Monitor Your Health: Don’t ignore chest pain, unusual fatigue, irregular heartbeats, or breathing difficulties, seek medical help immediately.
The festive season is meant for happiness and celebration, but it doesn’t have to compromise your health. With small adjustments, watching what you eat, practicing moderation, and maintaining proper sleep you can enjoy the festivities while keeping your heart safe and strong.
