When Irrfan hurled abuses at Om Puri and Naseeruddin Shah

When Irrfan Khan hurled abuses at Om Puri and Naseeruddin Shah on the sets of 'Maqbool'; Deepak Dobriyal recalls massive episode

Vishal Bhardwaj’s ‘Maqbool’ is one of the classic films of Indian cinema. Starring Irrfan Khan, Tabu, Naseeruddin Shah, Pankaj Kapur, Om Puri, Piyush Mishra, and more. The film also featured Deepak Dobriyal in a brief appearance. In a recent interview, the actor talked about working with the legends on the sets of the film.

What made Irrfan Khan abused while shooting ‘Maqbool’ with veterans Om Puri and Naseeruddin Shah?

In an interview with SCREEN, Deepak Dobriyal shared his experience working with talented actors like Irrfan Khan, Naseeruddin Shah, Tabu, and others. The actor also revealed one episode that happened on the set. It took place when they were shooting for the scene where Piyush Mishra gets killed and his dead body is brought to Irrfan Khan’s character’s house.Talking about the same, Deepak Dobriyal said, “As Irrfan bhai starts mourning, someone asks Om Puri saab where he found the body. And he says, ‘In the backyard of the haveli.’”However, according to Dobriyal, Vishal Bhardwaj felt that the veteran actor pronounced ‘haveli’ with a slight Punjabi accent, and it made everyone laugh on the set. Soon, Naseeruddin Shah joined him, and they both delivered different versions of ‘Haveli’.Deepak Dobriyal stated that a lot of fun was going on on the set; however, the scene was not coming together. He shared that after multiple retakes, Irrfan Khan, who was immersed in the scene, could be seen affected by the repeated breaks. He said, “But no one had the courage to say anything to Om ji or Naseer saab; they’re legends. And to be fair, their characters were written with a layer of humor.”In the next moment, as per Deepak Dobriyal, Irrfan Khan “exploded” on the set. Elaborating on what happened on the set, he said, “He (Irrfan) abused right there during the shot. Then immediately, he apologized and said, ‘Sorry, I thought abusing would help me act.'”Deepak quipped that both the veterans were stunned and quickly became serious about the same. He said, “Both of them froze. The set suddenly became serious, and from that moment, the tone was set. We got the shot, and there were no more issues.”
