In recent years, Indian consumers are moving away from heavy makeup and instant glow treatments, turning instead to dermatologist-recommended ingredients to achieve lasting radiance.

Dr. Kusumika Kanak, Consultant Dermatologist at Sahyadri Super Speciality Hospital, Pune, explains, “This change reflects a growing understanding that a truly radiant glow comes from healthy skin, not just temporary shine. Backed by years of clinical research, these dermatologist-approved ingredients are helping people achieve a natural, even-toned brightness that lasts well beyond the festive days.”

Among the most popular ingredients is retinol, a derivative of vitamin A, which promotes faster cell renewal and collagen formation. Used gradually and in appropriate quantities, it diminishes fine lines, refines uneven texture, and lightens dark spots. Other favorites include niacinamide (vitamin B3), which reduces redness, controls oil production, and fortifies the skin barrier particularly beneficial for Indian skin exposed to heat and humidity.

Vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant, fades dark spots and dullness while aiding sun protection. Hyaluronic acid ensures hydration, keeping skin soft, plump, and non-greasy. Ceramides, naturally found lipids in the skin, repair and protect the outer layer while preventing dryness, a major benefit during the dry festive season.

“Peptides are tiny chains of proteins that signal collagen production, improving elasticity and reducing early sagging,” adds Dr. Kanak. “Azelaic acid helps calm redness and pigmentation, ideal for sensitive or acne-prone skin. For gentle exfoliation, alpha-hydroxy acids like glycolic and lactic acid reveal a fresh, glowing layer. Finally, mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide protect skin from UV rays and preserve the benefits of these active ingredients.”

While evidence-based ingredients are crucial, Indian consumers are also increasingly seeking assured efficacy and safety.

Dr. Smriti Naswa Singh, Consultant, Dermatology & Cosmetology, Fortis Hospital, Mulund, notes, “It’s true that now Indian consumers do not want to take chances. They are ready to pay, but they really want quality products. Many patients come to us asking if a product will suit them, because the market is full of items that may have no effect or can cause allergies. When they consult a dermatologist, they know the product will be hypoallergenic and more effective.”

She adds, “Over-the-counter products often have a lower percentage of active ingredients, whereas prescribed medicines, serums, and creams contain higher concentrations for faster results. But using them incorrectly can cause side effects. Dermatologists guide patients on what ingredients suit their skin type and any contraindications—for example, during pregnancy, for children, or lactating mothers. This knowledge does not come from social media, it comes from science.”

This festive season, the shift toward dermatologist-backed skincare highlights a move from temporary makeup solutions to long-term skin health. By using clinically proven ingredients under professional guidance, consumers can enjoy a natural, radiant glow that lasts well beyond the celebrations, combining efficacy, safety, and confidence.
