When Is Eid Milad-un-Nabi 2025?

This year, Eid Milad-un-Nabi will be observed on September 6. However, as the Islamic calendar is based on moon sightings, the dates sometimes differ slightly between communities.

Sunni Muslims usually celebrate it on the 12th of Rabi’ al-awwal, while Shia Muslims mark the occasion on the 17th of the same month.

The day is not only observed as the Prophet’s birthday but also remembered by some as the day of his passing. For this reason, while many communities rejoice with decorations and gatherings, others observe it more solemnly.

History And Origin

The idea of commemorating the Prophet’s birth dates back to the early Islamic caliphates. It is believed that the Fatimids first initiated the practice.

Initially, only the ruling Shia Muslims were allowed to observe it in Egypt. By the 11th and 12th centuries, celebrations spread to other regions such as Syria, Morocco, Turkey, and Spain, eventually being adopted by some Sunni Muslim communities as well.

Historians believe Prophet Muhammad was born in Mecca in 570 CE, on the 12th day of Rabi’ al-awwal. Since then, this day has been seen as a reminder of his life’s mission, kindness, and the values of humanity and compassion he preached.

Eid Milad-un-Nabi Significance

For Muslims, Eid-e-Milad is also a day of reflection. It is considered a time to remember the Prophet’s role as a guide and messenger of Allah, and to remind people of his principles of generosity, humility, and brotherhood.

Communities come together in large numbers to honour his memory, pray for blessings, and share joy with others.

Rituals And Celebrations

Preparations for Eid-e-Milad usually begin a day before. Streets, mosques, homes, and marketplaces are decorated with green flags and lights. People wear new clothes, distribute sweets, and visit mosques for special prayers. Many also tie green bands around their wrists as a symbol of their faith.

At home, women prepare traditional dishes such as Sevaiyan and Sheer Khurma to share with family and friends. Elders often narrate stories about the Prophet’s life, highlighting his values of kindness and compassion, passing them down to the younger generation.

Charity and acts of kindness are also a key part of the day. Many donate food, clothes, or money to those in need, following the Prophet’s example of generosity. Some devotees travel to famous mosques and dargahs such as Jama Masjid, Haji Ali Dargah, Nizamuddin Auliya, and Ajmer Sharif to offer prayers and seek blessings.

In essence, Eid Milad-un-Nabi is both an observation and an occasion to reflect on the timeless teachings of Prophet Muhammad, reminding Muslims of the values of love, compassion, and humanity that form the core of Islam.
