While detox diets and fad cleanses may sound appealing, they don’t work the way they claim.

In today’s fast-paced world, many people turn to detox diets, juice cleanses, or quick fixes in the hope of losing weight, clearing their skin, or boosting energy levels. These diets often promise dramatic changes within just a few days. While detox diets and fad cleanses may sound appealing, they don’t work the way they claim.

Dr Shabana Parveen, Head of Dietetics at Artemis Hospitals, helps decode the myths and misconceptions.

The Body’s Natural Detox System

Our skin, liver, kidneys, and lungs all work together to remove toxins. This natural detoxification process happens every day and cannot be replaced by any juice or drink. Most detox diets, however, are overly restrictive and lack essential nutrients. Relying only on juices or consuming very few calories can lead to fatigue, headaches, muscle loss, and even a weakened immune system.

Why Quick Fixes Fail

Another reason fad diets don’t work is sustainability. Some people may experience temporary weight loss or feel lighter during the diet, but the weight usually returns once they resume normal eating habits. This “yo-yo effect” can harm metabolism and make long-term weight management more difficult.

A Healthier Approach

The smarter path is balance not restriction. Eating more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and staying hydrated naturally supports the body’s detox systems. Adequate sleep and regular exercise are equally important for maintaining energy and overall health.

Quick fixes and detox diets are short-term illusions. True health comes from daily habits that nourish the body and are sustainable in the long run.

Key Takeaways: Why Detox Diets Don’t Work

The body already detoxifies naturally through the liver, kidneys, skin, and lungs.

Juice cleanses and extreme diets lack essential nutrients and may weaken immunity.

Weight lost on detox diets is usually temporary and quickly regained.

Yo-yo dieting can slow down metabolism and harm long-term health.

Real wellness comes from balanced nutrition, hydration, quality sleep, and regular activity.
