While supplements can aid in managing fitness, they should be complemented with healthy habits.

Celebrity nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar, joined by Malaika Arora, recently appeared on Soha Ali Khan’s podcast on YouTube (August 22), where the trio unpacked one of the most debated topics in the fitness world today: protein powders and supplements. With social media pushing quick fixes and ‘gym body’ trends, the nutritionist shared a refreshing take on what really matters in long-term health.

Do You Really Need Supplements for a Gym Body?

When Soha Ali Khan asked if she discourages supplementation altogether, Rujuta Diwekar clarified her stance. “As far as supplements go, if they’re part of what you’re already doing, eating correctly, sleeping on time, exercising, being mindful, and you add a supplement or two, I think it’s okay,” she explained.

However, she cautioned against an overreliance on pills and powders. “If your entire focus is on pills, powders, and products at the cost of eating home-cooked food, staying regular with your workouts, and sleeping well, then it’s not worth it,” she added.

Is Staying Fit Really That Expensive?

Rujuta also addressed another widespread belief that fitness comes with a hefty price tag. According to her, this is a myth. “If you really know what your body needs and how to work around it, fitness isn’t heavy on your pocket at all,” she said.

She stressed that the obsession with supplements often creates unnecessary financial pressure. Many people, influenced by glossy marketing, assume that being healthy means stocking up on costly products, when in reality, small, consistent lifestyle choices are more impactful.

The Social Media Trap

The nutritionist pointed out how this myth is reinforced by unregulated digital promotions. “This misconception largely comes from unregulated social media marketing, where influencers often push supplements without disclosing paid partnerships,” she noted.

Such tactics convince people to chase shortcuts instead of investing in balanced eating, movement, and rest. For Rujuta, the foundation of health is still simple – a wholesome diet, quality sleep, and regular activity.

Rujuta’s advice is a reminder that while supplements may have their place, they should never replace basics. The focus, she says, should be on sustainable, affordable habits that actually work. In a world chasing quick fixes, her message is clear: fitness isn’t found in a jar. It’s built in your kitchen, your routine, and your mindset.
