Bras are often considered essential for women’s breast health, providing support, easing the weight on the shoulders, and helping maintain good posture. Despite this, many women remain unsure about the long-term effects of wearing a bra. Questions often arise regarding whether wearing a bra daily improves breast shape or even increases breast size.

Dr Sonali Gupta, former gynaecologist at Fortis Hospital, Greater Noida, told News18 that bras play a key role in supporting women’s breasts. “A bra helps prevent sagging and maintains proper shape. For women with heavier breasts, it is particularly important, as it improves posture and reduces strain on the shoulders and back,” she explained. Bras also absorb moisture, reduce discomfort, and can improve overall breast health by preventing several related problems.

Dr Sonali also clarified that wearing a bra daily does not increase breast size. “A bra only offers temporary support. It keeps breasts in position and provides comfort, but it does not permanently make them larger or smaller,” she said. Breast size, she noted, is primarily determined by genetics, hormonal changes, pregnancy, and weight fluctuations. While bras can help delay sagging, they cannot alter the natural shape or size of breasts.

According to Dr Sonali, bras also do not cause any permanent change in breast shape. “They only provide temporary support, giving the appearance of an improved shape, but they cannot change it permanently,” she said. Breast shape depends on several physical factors.

The right bra design and fitting can support the breasts and reduce sagging. However, wearing the wrong size or avoiding bras altogether for long periods can accelerate sagging. To improve shape, she recommended breast-toning exercises alongside wearing properly fitted bras.
