In 1968, the multi-starrer film Brahmachari ruled the silver screen, captivating audiences with Shammi Kapoor’s charm, Pran’s powerful acting, and Rajshree’s innocence. Yet, it was Mumtaz who truly stole the hearts of the audience. Her confidence, smile, and energetic dance moves in the iconic song ‘Aaj Kal Tere Mere Pyar Ke Charche’ made her not just a star but a fashion trendsetter, whose style remains iconic even today.

At the time, sarees were traditionally draped, but Mumtaz introduced a modern and glamorous style that broke conventions. Her bright orange, form-fitting saree paired with a short sleeveless blouse instantly became a trend. Young girls saw for the first time that sarees could be both traditional and fashionable.

Mumtaz’s Trendsetting Look

The actress wore a pre-pleated orange saree with a golden lace border and ruffled hemline, perfectly hugging her figure. She accessorised with a choker necklace, chandelier earrings, and haath patti, while her 1960s puffy hairstyle completed the glamorous look. This style quickly became more talked about than the song itself, as fans sought to emulate her fashion.

Saree Designed For Dance

Initially hesitant to dance in such a fitted saree, Mumtaz was reassured by costume designer Bhanu Athaiya, who created a special saree with a side zip and pre-made pleats for ease of movement. The long pallu and body-hugging fit set it apart from conventional draping, eventually earning the name ‘Mumtaz Saree Draping Style’.

Impact On Fashion

Mumtaz’s orange saree triggered a fashion revolution in Bollywood. Sarees were no longer seen only as wedding or traditional wear but as a stylish and glamorous outfit suitable for parties and events. Designers and film costume creators began experimenting with new draping styles, inspired by her iconic look.

Decades later, Mumtaz’s saree remains a symbol of innovation in Indian fashion. Whenever the song is played, fans not only enjoy the music but also fondly remember the actress’s unmatched style and the lasting impact of her fashion choices on Bollywood and beyond.
