It is a reminder that our brain, like the rest of our body, needs daily care. A healthy brain not only reduces the risk of Alzheimer’s and dementia but also keeps memory, focus, and mood in balance. The good news is that small lifestyle changes can make a big difference. Dr Neha Pandita, Consultant Neurology, Fortis Okhla shares ten everyday habits to keep your brain healthy:

1. Eat a Balanced Diet

Recommended Stories

Include fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains, and foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids like fish and flaxseeds. These provide essential nutrients for brain function.

2. Stay Physically Active

Exercise increases blood flow to the brain and helps improve memory and mood. Even a 30-minute walk can make a difference.

3. Get Enough Sleep

Sleep is like a reset button for the brain. Aim for 7–8 hours of good sleep daily to improve concentration and learning ability.

4. Keep Learning New Things

Challenge your brain with new activities like reading, puzzles, learning a language, or playing an instrument. This keeps your brain active and flexible.

5. Manage Stress

Too much stress can harm brain cells. Practice relaxation methods like yoga, meditation, or deep breathing to keep stress under control.

6. Stay Socially Connected

Talking and spending time with friends and family keeps the brain engaged and reduces feelings of loneliness.

7. Limit Alcohol and Avoid Smoking

Both can damage brain cells. Limiting alcohol and quitting smoking protect long-term brain health.

8. Stay Hydrated

Our brain needs water to work properly. Drink enough water throughout the day to stay alert and focused.

9. Protect Your Head

Always wear a helmet while cycling or driving a two-wheeler. Protecting your head reduces the risk of brain injury.

10. Practice Mindfulness

Being mindful and living in the present moment improves memory, reduces anxiety, and keeps your brain calm.

Taking care of your brain doesn’t require drastic changes, just small, consistent habits every day. By staying active, eating right, and keeping your mind engaged, you can protect your memory and reduce the risk of conditions like Alzheimer’s.
