West Bengal Politics: Rebel TMC MPs Set for Delhi Showdown, Separate Group Demand Gains Momentum

Political turbulence within the All India Trinamool Congress appears to be deepening as rebel Members of Parliament prepare for a crucial strategy meeting in New Delhi. According to emerging reports, a gathering of dissident TMC MPs is scheduled for Sunday evening, where the future course of action and the possibility of seeking formal recognition as a separate parliamentary group will be discussed. The developments come amid claims that a significant number of lawmakers have distanced themselves from the leadership of Mamata Banerjee. Rebel MP Jagadish Varma Basunia has reportedly asserted that the dissident camp represents the “real TMC” and possesses the numerical strength required to seek separate seating arrangements in Parliament. The political significance of the move lies in anti-defection provisions. Under the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution, a breakaway faction can seek recognition if it commands the support of at least two-thirds of a party’s legislators or MPs. Reports suggest that the rebel camp believes it has crossed that threshold, strengthening its case before parliamentary authorities. The situation has become more intense with reports that the dissident MPs may meet Om Birla on Monday to formally present their claim. Meanwhile, supporters of Mamata Banerjee have accused rival forces of engineering defections through political pressure and external influence. Adding to the uncertainty, TMC MP Mala Roy has resigned as the president of the party’s women’s wing, citing personal reasons. Her resignation is being viewed as another setback for the party as it struggles to contain internal unrest following recent electoral challenges. With rebellion, resignations, and competing claims of legitimacy dominating the political landscape, the coming days could prove decisive for the future direction of TMC and opposition politics in West Bengal.
