West Bengal Phase 2 Voting: Matua, Women, Minority Votes Key as Voters Flag Safety, Welfare

West Bengal Phase 2 Voting is witnessing a complex interplay of social and political factors that could निर्णे the outcome across crucial constituencies. Experts point to three dominant influences shaping voter behavior in this phase—Matua voters, women voters, and minority communities. The Matua community, a significant Scheduled Caste group with roots tracing back to erstwhile East Pakistan (now Bangladesh), holds considerable sway in nearly 50 seats across Nadia and North & South 24 Parganas. With an estimated population share of around 17 percent in the state, their voting preference is expected to play a decisive role. Historically influential, this bloc has been actively courted by major political parties. Women voters have emerged as another powerful force, with consistently high turnout recorded in earlier phases. Analysts attribute this to targeted welfare schemes and a strong emotional connect with leadership. Initiatives such as direct financial assistance programs and healthcare benefits have enhanced political engagement among women, making them a crucial deciding factor. Minority votes, particularly from Muslim communities, are also expected to remain significant. Despite attempts at polarization, large-scale fragmentation of this vote bank appears unlikely in most constituencies, though some localized variations may occur in districts like Murshidabad and Malda. On the ground in Kolkata, voters arriving at polling booths highlighted issues like governance, development, and especially women’s safety as key concerns. Security has been tightened in sensitive booths, especially where high-profile leaders are expected to cast their votes.
