The political battle over the Women’s Reservation Bill continues after its failure in the Lok Sabha due to the government’s inability to secure a two-thirds majority. As a result, the proposed 33% reservation for women remains uncertain and effectively stalled. Despite this setback, the government’s overall majority is not under threat. Politically, the situation has opened an opportunity for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) to target opposition parties by portraying them as anti-women. The opposition, however, considers the outcome a victory, as it had consistently opposed the bill for various reasons. The Indian National Congress raised concerns about delimitation affecting its electoral prospects, while parties like Samajwadi Party and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam had their own political and regional objections. All India Trinamool Congress also questioned linking reservation with delimitation. After over 20 hours of debate, the bill failed, intensifying political tensions, with leaders like Rahul Gandhi actively criticizing the government during proceedings.
