Parliament Brief: Lok Sabha Adjourned Till Noon Amid Opposition Protests and Slogan-Shouting

The Lok Sabha witnessed noisy scenes on the opening day of the Monsoon Session, forcing proceedings to be adjourned until 12:00 noon after persistent protests by opposition members. Despite repeated appeals from Speaker Om Birla to maintain order and allow Question Hour to continue, slogan-shouting and demonstrations inside the House disrupted parliamentary business. Earlier in the session, the government responded to a question on the Gyan Bharat Mission, highlighting its objective of preserving India’s manuscript heritage through digitization, research, and wider public access. The government stated that the mission has surveyed over one crore manuscripts, digitized millions of records, and uploaded a significant number to digital platforms. It also indicated that manuscripts in regional and tribal languages would be included in future documentation and preservation efforts. As Question Hour progressed, opposition MPs entered the Well of the House carrying placards and raising slogans over various issues. Speaker Om Birla urged members to uphold the dignity and traditions of Parliament, emphasizing that meaningful debate and dialogue—not protests inside the chamber—are the foundation of parliamentary democracy. He assured members that adequate opportunities would be provided under parliamentary rules to raise their concerns. With disruptions continuing despite repeated requests for cooperation, the Speaker announced the adjournment of the House until noon. The developments underscored the sharp political divide expected to characterize the Monsoon Session, with both the government and the opposition preparing for intense debates on a range of national issues in the days ahead.
