Kerala: ED raid sparks clash in Thiruvananthapuram, vehicles attacked, police injured

A high-voltage political confrontation unfolded in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, after Enforcement Directorate (ED) teams conducted searches linked to an alleged money laundering case involving individuals connected to a company reportedly associated with former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s family. The operation, carried out at multiple locations, quickly escalated into a tense law-and-order situation.  According to reports, ED officials were conducting coordinated raids at around 10 premises when protests began to intensify outside the locations. The investigation is linked to alleged financial transactions involving a private firm and a corporate entity, with claims of irregular fund transfers and lack of corresponding services in return, triggering scrutiny under anti-money laundering provisions. Tensions peaked when ED officials were leaving one of the premises after completing their operation. A large group of protestors allegedly gathered and blocked their exit route. The situation escalated rapidly, with stones reportedly being hurled at vehicles carrying ED personnel. Visuals from the site showed damaged vehicles with shattered windshields as security forces attempted to control the crowd. Police forces deployed at the scene intervened to secure the ED team and ensure their safe exit. Despite heavy deployment, several police personnel were reportedly injured during the clash as they tried to disperse the crowd and prevent further escalation. Eventually, the ED officials were safely escorted away from the area. Following the incident, political tensions intensified further. While opposition voices accused the ruling side of shielding those under investigation, leaders from the ruling party alleged a coordinated political attempt to target them. The confrontation has now added a fresh layer of political friction to an already sensitive financial investigation. As of now, the situation is under control, but the incident has raised serious concerns over security during high-profile enforcement actions and the growing political polarization around investigative agency operations in the state.
