India vision 2047: Income Survey Vital for Better Policy Planning, Says Dr. Saurabh Garg

Highlighting the importance of data-driven governance, Dr. Saurabh Garg, Secretary of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, emphasized the need for income surveys to support effective policymaking during ABP Network’s India@2047 Conclave. Speaking at the event, Dr. Garg explained that income surveys are a common practice in many countries and help governments gain a clearer understanding of citizens’ economic conditions. He noted that India has also initiated such surveys and has received a substantial number of responses from participants across the country. According to Dr. Garg, the survey primarily focuses on identifying sources of income rather than collecting unnecessary personal details. The objective is to understand how households earn and sustain their livelihoods, enabling policymakers to design targeted welfare measures and development programs. Addressing concerns about privacy, he assured that income-related information remains highly confidential and is handled with strict safeguards. The collected data is used only for statistical and policy purposes and is not disclosed publicly at an individual level. Dr. Garg stressed that reliable income data plays a crucial role in shaping policies that reflect the real needs of the population. By analyzing income patterns, governments can better identify vulnerable groups, address economic disparities, and allocate resources more effectively. He further noted that accurate economic data becomes increasingly important as India moves toward its long-term development goals under the Vision 2047 framework. Surveys of this nature help authorities understand changing income trends, employment patterns, and social realities, allowing them to formulate evidence-based policies. The remarks underscored the growing importance of statistical surveys in governance and highlighted how data collection can contribute to inclusive growth and more responsive public policy.
