At the ABP Network’s Ideas of India Summit 2026, the session Beyond Degrees: Creating Leaders for Tomorrow brought together academic insight and public discourse in a compelling conversation between Suranjan Das, Vice Chancellor of Adamas University, and author Chetan Bhagat. The dialogue explored how higher education must evolve beyond conventional credentials to nurture adaptable, ethical, and globally aware leaders. Das emphasized participatory academic administration, highlighting the importance of dialogue, inclusivity, and bottom-up governance in shaping institutions that respond to student aspirations. Drawing from experiences across universities and international academia, he reflected on how civilizational ties and people-to-people engagement shape not just diplomacy but also educational outlooks. A central theme was the future of higher education in an AI-driven world. Das argued that while technology can transform teaching, true learning remains a human process requiring critical thinking, ethics, and context areas where liberal arts play a vital role. He advocated a “second generation” of education reforms balancing excellence, equity, access, and internationalization, alongside adaptive pedagogy and blended learning models. The session concluded with an optimistic outlook: when education aligns with industry, technology, and human values, it can prepare students not just for jobs, but for lifelong leadership and global citizenship in a rapidly changing world.
