As rising tensions between the United States and Iran continue to shake global energy markets, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged Indians to adopt austerity measures aimed at protecting the country’s economy from the growing international crisis. The Prime Minister outlined seven key appeals focused on reducing fuel consumption, conserving foreign exchange, and promoting self-reliance amid fears of prolonged disruption in crude oil and gas supplies. Addressing the nation, PM Modi appealed to citizens to prioritize work-from-home wherever possible, avoid purchasing gold for the next one year, reduce petrol and diesel usage, and use public transport such as metro services. He also called for limiting edible oil consumption, reducing dependence on chemical fertilizers by encouraging natural farming, preferring indigenous products over foreign brands, and avoiding unnecessary foreign travel for a year. The Prime Minister described these measures as acts of patriotism during a period of global uncertainty. According to the government, the ongoing conflict in West Asia has severely impacted international supply chains and pushed crude oil prices sharply higher, increasing pressure on India’s foreign exchange reserves and import bills. The appeal has sparked intense political debate across the country. Supporters of the government argue that conserving fuel and foreign currency is necessary to shield India from worsening global instability. Opposition leaders, however, criticized the suggestions, particularly the call to postpone gold purchases, arguing that gold carries deep cultural, emotional, and economic significance in Indian households. Critics also questioned whether restrictions on travel, fuel usage, and consumption could negatively affect sectors such as tourism, automobiles, retail, and jewellery. Despite the political reactions, the government maintains that India remains economically stable compared to many countries facing severe energy shortages and inflation due to the ongoing geopolitical crisis.
