Elections Update: Security Tightened in Bengal as Re-Polling Witnesses Protest Over Alleged Intimidation

In West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas, re-polling in 15 booths has triggered fresh political tension and local unrest. Voting began at 7 AM amid long queues, with turnout recorded at 36% in Diamond Harbour and 38% in Magrahat by 11 AM. However, the situation in Falta turned tense as residents staged protests alleging post-poll violence and intimidation linked to earlier voting patterns. Locals claimed that after the last phase of voting, they were targeted and threatened for allegedly supporting the BJP, with accusations of house attacks and intimidation by rival political groups. Protesters demanded strict action, arrests, and even expressed distrust in the system, alleging failure of protection for voters. Women protesters also raised concerns over safety and demanded stronger security measures. Heavy deployment of Central Armed Police Forces and Kolkata Police has been made to control the situation and prevent escalation. While voting continues smoothly in many booths, the protest site remains sensitive with large crowds and allegations of political violence dominating the narrative. Amid this, authorities continue monitoring the re-polling process, as both BJP and TMC trade allegations over electoral conduct. The incident highlights rising political tension in Bengal ahead of counting day.
