Election Update: Election Commission of India Transfers Top Police Officials in West Bengal

Major administrative changes have been ordered in West Bengal following the announcement of election dates by the Election Commission of India. After the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct, the poll body initiated a series of high-level transfers involving senior bureaucrats and police officials across the state. According to the latest update, the Director General of Police, Inspector General, and the Police Commissioner of Kolkatahave been transferred as part of the reshuffle aimed at ensuring a neutral administrative setup ahead of the elections. Earlier, the Chief Secretary and Principal Secretary of the state had also been replaced as part of the Election Commission’s directives. New officers have been appointed to take charge of key law-enforcement roles during the election period. The reshuffle comes immediately after the announcement of the poll schedule and is seen as a standard measure taken by the Election Commission to ensure free and fair elections. However, the decision has triggered political reactions. Leaders from the ruling All India Trinamool Congress and other opposition parties have questioned the timing of the transfers, alleging that the Election Commission is acting under political pressure. The administrative overhaul indicates heightened oversight by the poll body as the state prepares for a crucial electoral contest.
