Sharp political confrontation unfolded in the Rajya Sabha after BJP leaders accused Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge of misleading the House regarding events in the Lok Sabha. Objecting strongly, the ruling party stated that claims suggesting Rahul Gandhi was not allowed to speak were factually incorrect. BJP members asserted that the Lok Sabha Speaker had allotted nearly 40 minutes to the Leader of the Opposition, but he repeatedly went beyond the prescribed rules and defied the Speaker’s rulings. The ruling side further rejected Kharge’s argument that both Houses of Parliament must function in tandem. BJP leaders challenged the opposition to cite any constitutional rule or parliamentary precedent that mandates automatic adjournment of the Rajya Sabha if the Lok Sabha is adjourned. They emphasized that while both Houses together form Parliament, their functioning is governed independently by separate rules and procedures. Strong words were also used against what the BJP termed as “deliberate tactics” to disrupt proceedings, alleging that after being given sufficient time to speak, the opposition attempted to disturb the Prime Minister and derail parliamentary business. The House witnessed repeated appeals from the Chair to wind up discussions and allow proceedings to continue smoothly.
