Continuous heavy rainfall has caused severe flooding and widespread disruptions in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, and Jharkhand. Due to incessant downpour, schools in all 13 districts of Uttarakhand and several districts in Uttar Pradesh, including Moradabad, Meerut, Shamli, Muzaffarnagar, and Aligarh, were closed to ensure student safety. Punjab has been severely affected, with over 1,000 villages across 12 districts inundated. The Sutlej river caused significant damage after a dam in Fazilka broke, flooding homes and forcing local villagers and army personnel to reinforce riverbanks with sandbags. The state has reported 29 deaths so far. Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured Punjab’s Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann of full support to tackle the crisis. In Himachal Pradesh’s Sirmaur district, flooding caused by landslides threatened local temples, while in Jammu & Kashmir’s Udhampur, a vital bridge was washed away by floodwaters, disrupting connectivity. Meanwhile, in Uttar Pradesh’s Pilibhit, residents protested severe waterlogging, prompting state officials to take immediate action. In Jharkhand’s Giridih, poor road infrastructure forced locals to carry a pregnant woman on a makeshift stretcher to the hospital, highlighting ongoing development challenges in tribal areas.
